hand in hand…

HYE PARK FOR VOGUE KOREA…. LOVE HER.
For centuries dance has been the center of culture, both traditionally and as a part of pop culture.
It is no surprise that fashion and ballet have always walked hand in hand… somewhat…
Recently, in the January issue of Vogue, they used a dancer along side models… and I thought to myself how nice it is to see young men in dance make appearances in Vogue…Then I thought wait a second… I have a collection of these images that inspire me…. Then it made me realize even more so :

First we had Picasso doing costumes for the Ballet Russe and Paris Opera… And Balanchine commissioned lacroix… now Rodarte has helped out… and recently, Peter Martins commissioned Valentino for NYCB.

Photographers like Irving Penn and Annie Leibovitz have always photographed dancers, Annie said herself that it was impossible to photograph dance itself… so instead she focused on portraits of influential dancers…

Here are some of my favorite dance meets ballet images…

VOGUE…
I am always asked, “What is the most important thing to know when working in fashion?”
Most people would respond with be yourself… My answer differs:
DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!
It is important to know the who’s who of fashion…
Here is how it works… Condenast (owned by Advance Publications) owns the world of fashion publishing… this includes Vanity Fair, W, Details, Allure, Glamour and of course… VOGUE.
VOGUE is the bible in the world of fashion…
There are 19 editions of Vogue, and it was founded in 1892.
Anna Wintour is the Editor-inCheif of Vogue… making her like God.
The other Editor-in-Chief’s of Vogue to know…
UK … Alexandra Shulman
French… Emmanuelle Alt (Carine Roitfeld was  proir)
 Italia… Franca Sozzani
Anna Wintour and Franca Sozzani on the cover of Industrie.
Diana Vreeland and Grace Mirabella were former Editor-in-Chiefs at American Vogue.
Every issue of Vogue... I take the time to sit down with a good cup of coffee,
and read Vogue cover to cover. I don’t flip through and just look at the pictures…
I actually read what is going on…
Like any religion… there are rules… and we follow VOGUE’s… sometimes…
There are other bands of fashion religions which include the power of the PR Girl, the
sharp words of bloggers, the whimsical world of the stylists, the world of infinite possibilities... the designers,
and the incredible eyes of the photographers, the harsh demands of retail,  and the social climbing socialites
But in the world of fashion there is a job that everyone covets…
CREATIVE DIRECTOR
this infamous title will always belong to the fiery hair/spirited Grace Coddington...
She is responsible for making VOGUE… well… beyond beautiful. Her editorial spreads are gorgeous and they have been the inspiration for a lot of young aspiring fashionistas… When I was younger I would tear pictures from Vogue out and pin them on my wall… Later, I realized that every photo that I had ever pulled was hers. I don’t think anyone can produce a photo like her… not even me.
If Vogue is the Bible and Anna is God… Grace is like Jesus…
Making Vogue accessible to the public and translating Anna’s word, and point of view.
She is what makes fashion world glamorous and … well we all want her job.
 ….
It doesn‘t end there… because Condenast’s best friend is the LVMH group… LVMH basically owns most of the luxury goods, fashion and products…
Moet et Chandon, Vueve Clicquot, Belvedere, Fendi, Donna Karan, Emilio Pucci, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Celine, Parfums Christian Dior, Bulgari and Sephora are just some…
Finally, the third mean girl in this equation is the PPR group…
owning Gucci, Puma, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, YSL, Bottega Veneta, Volcom and more…
Between Condenast, LVMH, and PPR… well… they own the world of fashion…
thus why we follow their rules…
New Obsession… Equestrian all the way…

Vogue. Vogue. Vogue… What are you doing?

A formidable opponent to say the least, the power house in publishing and the Bible for those who are in fashion… Vogue.  Condenast’s publication just celebrated 120 years of fashion this past September, heralding the largest monthly publication ever. Backed by the notorious Anna Wintour, it seems as if Vogue is once again preparing for something bigger… But, for those of us who have flipped through the pages of Vogue since we were young, and started reading Vogue cover to cover as we aged we have realized two things.

The first is that Vogue is actually losing content. The photographers, the models and the clothes are becoming redundant and what was once the source of all inspiration to the fashion world is now becoming obsolete. Newer, younger, edgier magazines are making their way onto the stands and are catering to what fashionistas live for, not just the upper east side women. Secondly, it appears that Vogue’s massive budget is heading into their Fendi wallets, and Prada bags. Vogue spends thousands upon thousands of dollars to produce photo shoots that are lack luster, uninspiring and mediocre. (The only thing we envy is their retouching department, they do have the best of the best.) Other than that this September was a let down for most readers, and after the anticipated October Issue, well… It was uninspiring.

Keira Knightly no doubt is Vogue cover worthy. She is talented, she is beautiful, and like the standard that Anna pushes the most, she is thin and fits into couture like a dream. It was nice to see behind the scene shots of the Vogue photo shoots, and Annie’s little spread on Tim Tebow was clever, and composited. It shows her shooting on a white backdrop and the actual photos published are scenic escapes. Vogue’s article on adoption, and smaller articles on family life were charming. It was nice to see ballet in the pages this month, in fact it was nicer not to see a NYCB super star, but a rising star from SAB… Silas Farley.

The redundancy of Karli Kloss is becoming irritating. In the past three issues she has held the main fashion spread, now her face and body proportions seem to be the notorious look for Vogue. If this is the standard that Vogue is only going to publish, it will be impossible to replace Karli…

With all this being said, it makes me wonder why so many still think of Vogue as the bible, versus an icon. Fashion is drastically changing, and it is constantly changing, but it seems that the only people who aren’t paying attention are the editors at Vogue.

Big Day…

Today we officially launched http://www.socialculture.com
Including our new on-line social networking tools!
Go Us! It was Africa hot today… so Shorts, a tank, and Michael Kors.

Also, Vogue announced their September Cover that is due to hit stands next week. The largest issue ever. As Lady Gaga had the March 2011 cover, she now graces the cover again this time fiercer than ever in Vogue’s largest issue ever. 916 pages celebrating 120 years of ruling fashion. Anna Wintour has definitely done something right, as she has influenced generations at the masses. Now, fashion is now more than ever one of the most important things to the the majority of America. Somehow, everyone now is caring about fashion and wants to dress well. Bravo.

Now, it’s time for me to take over. Thanks.
So, as Vogue celebrates 120 years, we celebrate year 1…
Here’s to hoping we become a household name in fashion.
