OCT. 2, 1929 to 2000

in 1941 she was accepted to SAB on a full scholarship.
Ironic that she danced “Polio”a ballet made when she was 15.
She then contracted polio later in career- but before that she become a principal in NYCB’s first season, formerly ballet society. She joined the company at 17.
She became Balanchine’s fourth wife at 27.
She premiered 32 roles for her under balanchine, robbins, cunningham and more.
Needless to say she was great.
Irving Penn Photographed her multiple times.
She was the inspiration to Alberta Ferreti’s 2004 line.
